Bertie Beaver is Alberta’s wildfire prevention mascot, created in 1958 by the Alberta Forest Service with the help of Walt Disney Studios.
Inspired by the success of Smokey Bear in the U.S., Bertie was introduced to promote fire safety awareness across Canada – especially in Alberta’s vast forested landscapes.
As a friendly and clever beaver, Bertie helps children and families understand how to prevent human-caused wildfires and stay safe in the outdoors.
Over the decades, Bertie has appeared in school programs, public campaigns, educational books, posters, and even animated films. His presence is particularly strong in provincial parks and fire prevention materials, where he delivers clear and age-appropriate messages on responsible behavior in nature.
Bertie Beaver continues to be a key part of Alberta’s public education efforts, promoting forest protection and wildfire awareness with a smile.
